What Is a Wingdings Translator?

A Wingdings translator is a tool that swaps every letter you type for the matching symbol in the Wingdings symbol font, and back again. Because the tool maps keys to fixed pictures — a strict one-to-one cipher — encoding and decoding are always exact. The output is real Unicode text, so the symbols can be copied and pasted anywhere, even on devices that don't have the Wingdings font installed.

The History of Wingdings in One Minute

Wingdings launched in 1992 with Windows 3.1, built by type designers Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes out of their earlier Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars fonts. Three versions shipped almost together — Wingdings, Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3 — followed by Webdings in 1997 with the dawn of the web. Each key on your keyboard prints a small picture instead of a letter, which made Wingdings a playground for hidden messages, 1990s urban legends, and — decades later — the mysterious language of W.D. Gaster in Undertale. The full story lives on the font guide page.

Wingdings for Undertale & Gaster Fans

If you're here for Gaster: he speaks in capital letters rendered with the original Wingdings font. Our Gaster translator auto-uppercases your text before converting, reproduces Entry Seventeen exactly, and decodes Gaster-style messages back to English. Fans of the Deltarune sequels use the same mode for Wheelers entries and Goner dialogue.

Wingdings 1 vs. 2 vs. 3 vs. Webdings

Wingdings vs. Emojis: What's the Difference?

Emojis are colorful pictures with their own code points and platform-specific designs. Wingdings symbols are monochrome font glyphs that later received Unicode code points, which is why some of them can render as emojis on certain platforms. That overlap is exactly why we built the Classic text-style switch: when it's on, we append U+FE0E — a variation selector that asks for the plain text look — so your check marks stay check marks instead of becoming green boxes.

Sending Secret Messages the Fun Way

Because Wingdings is a simple key-to-symbol cipher, it's perfect for light-hearted puzzles: encode a spoiler, a riddle answer, or a birthday message and let friends decode it here. Type the message, copy the symbols, share them anywhere — then send them the link to this page as the "decoder ring". Teachers use it for classroom scavenger hunts and puzzle lovers embed it in geocaching hints.

Who Uses a Wingdings Translator?

Copy, Paste, and Font Notes

This tool outputs real Unicode characters — not a picture of the font — so your symbols survive copy-paste into Discord, Roblox, TikTok bios, Google Docs and plain-text email. Some rare Wingdings glyphs never received Unicode equivalents; for those keys we substitute the closest matching symbol. On Windows and Mac the genuine fonts ship with Microsoft Office, and here's how to check if you have them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wingdings?
Wingdings is a symbol font Microsoft shipped with Windows in 1992, designed by Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes from their Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars typefaces. Instead of letters, each key prints a small picture — a check mark, a hand, an arrow — so typing a word produces a row of symbols.
How do I translate English to Wingdings?
Type or paste your text in the left box of the translator above. Every character is mapped to its matching Wingdings symbol instantly as you type. Click Copy next to any output and paste the symbols anywhere Unicode is supported — Discord, Roblox profiles, documents, or chat apps.
How do I decode Wingdings back to English?
Use the second converter on this page: paste Wingdings symbols into the left box and the plain-English translation appears on the right. It recognizes Wingdings 1, 2, 3 and Webdings symbols, including the uppercase letters used by Undertale fans.
Why do some symbols turn into emojis?
Several Wingdings characters share code points with emoji. Your platform may render them as colorful emojis instead of classic black symbols. Keep the Classic text-style symbols option checked and we append a Unicode variation selector (U+FE0E) that forces the original text-style look — a toggle no other Wingdings translator offers.
How do I type a check mark in Wingdings?
In the Wingdings 1 font, a check mark is the ü key: ✓. A heavy check is ✓ or ✔, a ballot box with a check is þ (☑), an empty box is ÿ (◻) and a cross is û (✗). See the full set on our check mark page.
Does the Wingdings translator work on mobile?
Yes. The page is a lightweight static site that loads in under a second even on slow connections, and the converter works in any modern mobile browser with no app install.
What is Gaster mode?
In Undertale, the character W.D. Gaster speaks in Wingdings — always in capital letters. Gaster mode converts your text to uppercase automatically before translating, so GLADSTONEM style names come out exactly the way the game renders them. Try it on the Gaster translator page.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion runs locally in your browser with plain JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, logged, or stored — you can even use the translator offline once the page has loaded.
